Tom Cowan is a leading Exercise Physiologist. He has been based on Harley Street, the world-famous centre of medical excellence, for over 6 years, specialising in exercise prescription for cancer and cardiac patients.
His work has seen him become recognised as an expert by Public Health England and the Faculty for Sport and Exercise Medicine UK, who selected him to become a member of their Cancer and Exercise expert panel.
Tom has also presented research into preventing cardiovascular disease at international conferences and frequently presents on the science of Exercise and Cancer, with recent talks given at the Lululemon & The Urban Kitchen Breast Cancer Retreat on behalf of CHHP and to The British Dietetic Association (BDA). Tom also frequently contributes for several well-known health and fitness magazines and makes television appearances.
Tom holds regular clinics at the world-leading Harley Street clinic, The Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP), as well as working with patients privately at their homes, offices and gyms and remotely via phone/video call and through his online programmes. Tom has been selected as one of the Cancer and Exercise specialists to work at the first CanRehab Retreats with cancer patients in Lanzarote this September.
Tom's expertise span from working with the most complex clinical cases to elite performers, having previously been First Team Sports Scientist for Chelsea Football Club.
Tom is accredited by both the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) and the Register of Exercise Professionals and has a First Class Honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University. Tom is also proud to be a Lululemon ambassador.

Programmes are bespoke; tailored to your individual needs and goals. All programmes are available in the 3 different formats listed below to allow you to structure your programme in a way that best suits you.
Programmes are available in Remote and Online formats, making them accessible to individuals all over the world and providing the flexibility required by those based in the UK but who travel frequently to be able to keep to their programme wherever they are.
1) In-Person (Exercise sessions delivered face-to-face)
2) Remote (Exercise sessions delivered via phone or video call)
3) Online (A written exercise and lifestyle programme to follow, which is updated accordingly as you progress, with remote monitoring. Remote support provided via text/email/phone call)
Whichever programme format you choose, you will receive meticulously monitoring of your training sessions and exercise workload and your programme will be adapted as necessary to ensure the optimal physiological outcomes are achieved to progress you towards your physiological goals. Tom's work extends beyond the training sessions to provide a holistic approach, with Tom on-hand to provide advice and support remotely as well as helping to create a training and recovery schedule, providing advice and analysis on nutritional choices and monitoring physical activity levels and recovery.
HEALTH AND FITNESS OPTIMISATION
Tom is recognised as an expert in Cancer and Exercise and has vast experience in working with patients at all stages of treatment; pre-, during and post-treatment, to help to manage their side-effects and optimise their physiology, fitness levels, energy levels and immune function.
Tom is qualified to the highest level in Cardiac Rehabilitation with the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR). Tom is able to devise and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes for patients who have suffered a major cardiovascular event e.g. heart attack or stroke, had treatment including stents, a pacemaker or bypass surgery or are living with cardiovascular disease, heart failure or arrhythmias.

Tom is able to expertly advise individuals wishing to improve their health and fitness. This may be individuals with goals such as weight loss and body composition improvements, cardiovascular fitness and strength improvements, reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as reducing blood pressure or for amateur athletes training towards a physical challenge or event.

Tom is proud to form part of the Men's Health expert panel. Within this issue, he discusses how a sedentary lifestyle is an independent risk factor for developing chronic diseases, highlighting the importance of moving frequently and being physically active irrespective of whether you exercise on a regular basis or not. I also suggest some of the metrics that we can use to better assess our health status.
